- Bicyclists are required to wear helmets while riding at the Berkeley Lab.
- LBNL buses are equipped with bicycle racks in the front and rear of the bus.
- Use bicycle rack at your own risk. Berkeley Lab does not assume liability for damage to your bicycle.
- If you experience difficulties or notice the bicycle rack is not working properly, please notify the bus operator and/or contact the bus supervisor at 486-4165 or email busservices@lbl.gov and/or post your comments with specific information on the Operations Suggestion box.
LOADING A BICYCLE ON THE BUS:
Prepare your bicycle for loading by: removing water bottles, pumps and other loose items that could fall off while the bus is in motion.
Load your bicycle as quickly and safely as possible keeping in mind not to step into the oncoming traffic lane. Please note that loading or unloading a bicycle from the street side may cause injury or death.
If you are loading a bicycle on the FRONT bicycle rack:
- Make eye contact with the bus operator and inform the bus operator that you are loading bicycle.
- Squeeze handle up to release latch, then fold down the bicycle rack. You only need to use one hand to unlatch and pull the bicycle rack down, so you can hold your bicycle with your other hand.
- Lift your bicycle onto the bicycle rack fitting wheels into proper wheel slots which are labeled.
- Place your hand on the curve portion of the foam padded support arm and pull the support arm over the top of the front bicycle wheel to secure the bicycle. The support arm needs to be raised so that the hook rests beyond the highest point of the tire closest to the frame.
- Board the bus and do not forget you have a bicycle with you when you get off at your stop.
- Inform the bus operator you are getting a bicycle off of the bus.
- Be sure to unload your bicycle from the curb or the front of the bus, not from the traffic lane.
- Place your hand on the curve portion of the foam padded support arm and raise the support arm off of the tire. The support arm folds down to a secure position. To avoid pinch points be sure not to grasp the metal portion of the support arm with your hand or fingers.
- Lift your bicycle out of the rack.
- Fold up the bicycle rack if there are no other bicycles on the rack and ensure the rack is securely locked into place. Step away from the bus with your bicycle and signal the bus operator.
IF YOU ARE LOADING A BICYCLE ON THE REAR BICYCLE RACK:
- Make eye contact with the bus operator and inform the bus operator that you are loading bicycle.
- Lift and hang your bicycle by the rear wheel and secure with the safety strap.
- Board the bus and do not forget you have a bicycle with you when you get off at your stop.
- Inform the bus operator you are getting a bicycle off of the bus.
- Be sure to unload your bicycle from the curb or the rear of the bus, not from the traffic lane.
- Remove the safety strap and lift your bicycle out of the rack.
- Step away from the bus with your bicycle and signal the bus operator.
